Designing a successful learner

In some SCE schools, the whole staff have collectively agreed a list of aims for the 21st century learner; reflecting a concern for the development of the whole person, not just the specific skills and knowledge that are rooted firmly in the National Curriculum but also the attitudes and qualities essential to learning, particularly in a highly mobile world.

This is an important part of clearly articulating the end outcome of their curriculum work in advance. These relate to the following:

  • The development of pupils’ thinking skills, especially in open ended situations;
  • Positive attitudes and greater independence;
  • Improved writing skills;
  • Development of pupils as creative thinkers;
  • Pupils as independent investigators;
  • PLTS (personal. learning and thinking skills – creative participators, problem solvers etc);
  • PLTS through a practical approach;
  • Better understanding of the local environment and culture (international dimension);
  • Greater motivation and commitment to learning;
  • The achievement of ECM outcomes.
