Developing the curriculum

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority has been promoting a wide debate about how the curriculum might need to evolve to better prepare young people for life and work in the 21st Century. Schools have been encouraged to become part of a co-development network and in doing so take ownership of the curriculum and use the national framework flexibly and innovatively.

In response to QCDA's invitation, a small group of SCE schools who were currently focusing on redesigning their curriculum, were consulted about the possibility of becoming co-developers. As a result of this initial consultation, it was felt that all SCE schools should be given the opportunity of becoming part of an SCE curriculum network project. The project ‘Building a 21st Century Curriculum’ has intended to support schools in the process of designing a framework for a ‘world-class curriculum’ and appropriate to our unique context. In becoming involved with an SCE curriculum network, schools have been able to work with QCDA to capture examples of best practice and next stage in curriculum design and delivery.

Different phases in the project have been used to widen the curriculum network and engage all schools in the discussion, development and sharing of practice. Aspects of our curriculum journey have been recorded in the document below.
