In SCE we believe there is a variety of positive effects and many substantial creative learning outcomes to be gained from a good quality arts education; including contributions to improve and develop children’s personal, social, creative and artistic skills and abilities.
To this end, we endeavor to provide a broad range of opportunities for our students to access to inspire, encourage and develop their artistic talents.
Our hugely popular and very successful annual Big Arts Week is a celebration of Art, Drama Dance and Music involving pupils, teachers, parents and professional artists working in schools. This also involves students working along side the professional artists and gaining an insight into the arts as a career.
The SCE Gifted and Talented Arts Summer School offers the opportunity for Yr 6 students transferring into Yr 7 to develop their learning in Art and Drama beyond that which school can offer. Each year for one week students take part in a residential in London working at the Globe Theatre and Tate Modern on the Southbank London. Yr 11 students following the Gold Arts Award act as leaders as part of the staff team.
A total of 51% SCE schools will have achieved the Arts Council's Artsmark by May 09. This is a national award scheme that recognises schools with a high level of provision in the arts. Only one other LA can match this record. By gaining an Artsmark, a school shows its commitment to the wider development of young people and teachers and to raising the profile of the arts in the school and local community.
We are also delighted to be able to offer in our Secondary Schools and Year Six in Primary the Arts Award opportunity. This is a national qualification which recognises how young people aged 11-25 develop as artists and arts leaders. The award is a personal learning programme which develops and assesses both arts-related skills (arts knowledge and understanding) and transferable skills (creativity, communication, planning and review, teamwork and leadership). 292 SCE students worldwide are now registered with the scheme and the SCE Centre is increasing daily.
The newly formed SCE partnership with Globe Education to inspire and raise standards in the teaching and learning of Shakespeare has given SCE students and staff opportunity to work alongside Globe practitioners both in Germany and Cyprus schools as well as at the Globe itself.
