The out of the classroom learning opportunities provided by schools represents more than simply enrichment of the curriculum but give children a real reason to learn and is accessible by all. The outcomes of Every Child Matters and the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning are all more readily achieved when learning takes place out of the classroom. Literacy and numeracy can be learned with real purpose and scientific and geographical understanding is enhanced through acquisition in the real world rather than in the abstract in the classroom. One wonders how young people can grow up with any real understanding of global environmental issues if they have little or no experience of their own environment. Out of classroom learning can enable young people to become better citizens for the future.
